MF Vanilla Bean was the record-selling female from Martin Farms on their 2015 Open House at the Farm, selling to Hill Top Simmentals of South Dakota for $18,000. Her unrivaled phenotype in the MF program and her production in the pasture there earned her the right to be called a donor, averaging over 15 embryos per flush. Her first ET calf, MF/WEF Sweet Vidalia, was a top lot in the 2014 Open House offering as an open heifer, and this member of the Burtner "Virginia" clan has more to come! Selling two embryos, guaranteeing one pregnancy if work is done by a certified embryologist.

Tux & Tails is a perfect compliment to any SimAngus program wanting to produce black baldy cattle with performance and style. "Tux" consistently transmits the baldy gene, making him a unique sire that can dress up any calf crop! Tux & Tails sired the high-selling bred heifer at the 2015 Tennessee Agribition sale which then went on to sell again on Sullivan's Maternal Legends sale for $14,000. If you have Angus cows to breed and you want SimAngus with just the right amount of chrome and all the other pieces that make SimAngus special, don't overlook this sire.

Artist Statement:

Kris Gulish and his family own and operate Laurel Hill Cattle Co. in Puryear, Tennessee. Born and raised in the cattle industry, Kris is a self-taught sculptor who has combined his natural artistic talent with his curiosity and appreciation of animal’s and their form. Kris is a member of ASA, AAA and AMAA, and his experience as a cattleman and as an artist includes everything from show cattle to rodeo stock and all walks in between.

Kris enjoys recreating an animal’s form and working to capture the essence of that animal as a tribute to its creation. Although bronzing is possible, it is an expensive process, so Kris often works in Sculpey, a heat treated PVC that can be painted and resembles ceramics or porcelain or in its finished stage. Working from photographs of your sire or donor dam, Kris will work with you to create a lasting, custom work of art you will treasure.

Tom Hilyer a talented painter will do a custom water color portrait of a sire or donor, up to 28" x 20" in size, unframed. value $500

Artist Statement:

I consider myself a “zen-biologist-country boy” who expresses the awe-inspiring mysteries of nature through art. My goal is to have those who observe my work feel deeply about the world that gives them life and sustains them. Whether I am painting a detail of an eagle’s feather, or the powerful beauty of a working mule, I want the viewer to connect with the idea that we are part of nature and every animal, plant, or lichen is important to our being here. Farmers and cattlemen understand that connection perhaps better than any other group. Many of my paintings are about their lives and their connection to the earth and their interdependent relationship with the creatures that sustain them. I choose watercolor as my medium for expression of these complex relationships because it is in itself complex. Watercolor, beyond any other medium, uses the qualities of life-giving light and water to work its magic. It blends and flows in ways that are often beyond the artist’s control, often directed by the natural forces of water itself. An unintended drop of translucent watery paint, an unplanned splotch or run, takes on a shape as though moved by a dynamic cosmic energy and suddenly becomes a bush or an animal hiding among the trees. I want those who view my art to feel the spontaneity and power of nature, to have intense feelings about the life they are dedicated to themselves, reliving the childhood memories of the farm, feeling the power of the animals they gave themselves to raising, the respect they have for the creatures that they depend on, and sometimes, just to say with pride, “I remember that cow.” For that reason, I not only paint a variety of nature scenes, but particularly enjoy doing simple portraits of a favorite horse or cow, or a family four- legged friend. After all, as Robert Bateman, perhaps the most well-known of modern nature artists has said, “There seems to be a myth in some circles that if the art is enigmatic and puzzling it must be more spiritual and transcendental.” Art does not have to be incomprehensible or “nouveau” to be truly art, nor to touch that deep well of primitive essence within us that awakens at the sight of a budding dogwood or a herd of cows feeding serenely on a hillside.
